Sapropel classification
Content and characteristics of sapropels from various deposits are very different and depend on the productivity of the water body, characteristics of the aboveground water flow, and climatic conditions. It is generally accepted that sapropels are freshwater sediments with concentration of organic matter larger than 15%; otherwise these sediments are regarded as highly ashy lake sediments.
